What is an EML (E-Mail Message) file?

E-Mail Message (EML) is the standard format for saving a single email message to disk. It follows the RFC 5322 internet message specification, storing the headers, the message body, and any attachments together as MIME-encoded plain text. Because it is an open standard rather than a vendor format, EML is what most email programs produce when you drag a message out of your inbox, and it is widely used for archiving and legal discovery.

How to open an EML file?

Most desktop email clients open EML directly. Mozilla Thunderbird reads it, as do Microsoft Outlook, Windows Mail, and Apple Mail.

Without an email client, you can still read one: rename the file to .txt to view the raw headers and body in a text editor, or drag it into a web browser, which renders the HTML portion of most messages. Note that Outlook’s own MSG format is different and proprietary — EML is the portable equivalent. You can also convert the file with our EML to PDF tool.

How to open a PDF file?

Most people head right to Adobe Acrobat Reader when they need to open a PDF. Adobe created the PDF standard and its program is certainly the most popular free PDF reader out there. It's completely fine to use, but I find it to be a somewhat bloated program with lots of features that you may never need or want to use.

Most web browsers, like both Chrome and Firefox, can open PDFs themselves. You may or may not need an add-on or extension to do it, but it's pretty handy to have one open automatically when you click a PDF link online. I highly recommend SumatraPDF or MuPDF if you're after something a bit more. Both are free.
