What is an XPS (XML Paper Specification) file?

XML Paper Specification (XPS) is a fixed-layout document format Microsoft created as an alternative to PDF. Like PDF, it captures a document exactly as it would print — fonts, images, and layout locked in place — so it looks identical on any screen or printer. An XPS file is a ZIP package of XML describing each page. Microsoft later standardised a revised version as OpenXPS, using the .oxps extension.

How to open an XPS file?

Windows includes the XPS Viewer, though on Windows 10 and 11 it is now an optional feature you may need to add through Settings → Apps → Optional features.

Cross-platform readers such as SumatraPDF and Okular open XPS on Windows and Linux, and GhostXPS converts it from the command line. Since XPS never gained wide adoption and PDF is supported everywhere, converting the file with our XPS to PDF tool is usually the simplest answer.

Most people head right to Adobe Acrobat Reader when they need to open a PDF. Adobe created the PDF standard and its program is certainly the most popular free PDF reader out there. It's completely fine to use, but I find it to be a somewhat bloated program with lots of features that you may never need or want to use.

Most web browsers, like both Chrome and Firefox, can open PDFs themselves. You may or may not need an add-on or extension to do it, but it's pretty handy to have one open automatically when you click a PDF link online. I highly recommend SumatraPDF or MuPDF if you're after something a bit more. Both are free.
