What is a VSD (Microsoft Visio Drawing) file?

Microsoft Visio Drawing (VSD) is the document format used by Microsoft Visio through the 2010 release. Visio is a diagramming application, and a VSD file holds the shapes, connectors, layers, and pages of drawings such as flowcharts, organisational charts, network topologies, floor plans, and process maps. Each shape can carry its own data fields, which is what allows Visio diagrams to double as lightweight databases of assets or steps.

How to open a VSD file?

Microsoft Visio opens VSD directly. Microsoft’s Visio Viewer for Windows opens, examines, and prints diagrams without the full editor.

LibreOffice Draw imports VSD, and diagrams.net opens Visio files in a browser. Detailed diagrams may lose some formatting outside Visio, so ask the author for a PDF export when precision matters. Visio 2013 and later use the VSDX format instead.

It's completely fine to use, but I find it to be a somewhat bloated program with lots of features that you may never need or want to use.

Most web browsers, like both Chrome and Firefox, can open PDFs themselves. You may or may not need an add-on or extension to do it, but it's pretty handy to have one open automatically when you click a PDF link online. I highly recommend SumatraPDF or MuPDF if you're after something a bit more. Both are free.
