What is a PPTM (PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Presentation) file?

PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Presentation (PPTM) is a Microsoft PowerPoint deck that is allowed to contain VBA macros. Presenters use macros to build interactive quizzes, custom navigation buttons, timers, and slides that pull in live data. Apart from the macro component, a PPTM is structurally identical to PPTX — a ZIP package of Open XML parts — and the separate extension exists purely so the file name signals that code may run.

How to open a PPTM file?

Microsoft PowerPoint opens PPTM and shows a security warning before macros are allowed to run. Enable them only if you trust the sender.

LibreOffice Impress displays PPTM slides correctly, but VBA macros may not work as intended. Google Slides imports the deck and discards the macros. To view the content with no macro risk, save it as PPTX or convert it with our PPTM to PDF tool.

Most people head right to Adobe Acrobat Reader when they need to open a PDF. Adobe created the PDF standard and its program is certainly the most popular free PDF reader out there. It's completely fine to use, but I find it to be a somewhat bloated program with lots of features that you may never need or want to use.

Most web browsers, like both Chrome and Firefox, can open PDFs themselves. You may or may not need an add-on or extension to do it, but it's pretty handy to have one open automatically when you click a PDF link online. I highly recommend SumatraPDF or MuPDF if you're after something a bit more. Both are free.
