E-Mail Message (EML) is the standard format for saving a single email message to disk. It follows the RFC 5322 internet message specification, storing the headers, the message body, and any attachments together as MIME-encoded plain text. Because it is an open standard rather than a vendor format, EML is what most email programs produce when you drag a message out of your inbox, and it is widely used for archiving and legal discovery.
How to open an EML file?
Most desktop email clients open EML directly. Mozilla Thunderbird reads it, as do Microsoft Outlook, Windows Mail, and Apple Mail.
Without an email client, you can still read one: rename the file to .txt to view the raw headers and body in a text editor, or drag it into a web browser, which renders the HTML portion of most messages. A TEXT file is an ordinary plain-text document, the same thing as a .txt file — unformatted characters with no styling, images, or layout attached. Everything the file contains is readable as-is, which is why plain text is used for notes, logs, configuration files, source code, and data exports. The only piece of hidden information is the character encoding, typically UTF-8, which tells software how to turn the stored bytes back into letters.
How to open a TEXT file?
Any text editor will do. Notepad on Windows, TextEdit on macOS, and gedit on Linux all open the file instantly, and so does every web browser.
If the document is very large or contains code, Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code handle it far more comfortably and let you switch encodings when characters display incorrectly. Word processors such as Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer can import the text if you want to add formatting. You can also convert the file with our TXT to PDF tool.
