E-Mail Message (EML) is the standard format for saving a single email message to disk. It follows the RFC 5322 internet message specification, storing the headers, the message body, and any attachments together as MIME-encoded plain text. Because it is an open standard rather than a vendor format, EML is what most email programs produce when you drag a message out of your inbox, and it is widely used for archiving and legal discovery.
How to open an EML file?
Most desktop email clients open EML directly. Mozilla Thunderbird reads it, as do Microsoft Outlook, Windows Mail, and Apple Mail.
Without an email client, you can still read one: rename the file to .txt to view the raw headers and body in a text editor, or drag it into a web browser, which renders the HTML portion of most messages. Note that Outlook’s own MSG format is different and proprietary — EML is the portable equivalent. You can also convert the file with our EML to PDF tool.

Plain Text (TXT) is the simplest document format there is: nothing but characters, with no fonts, colours, images, or layout information of any kind. What a TXT file does carry is a character encoding — today almost always UTF-8 — which determines how the bytes map to letters. Because there is no hidden structure, TXT is the most portable and durable format available, readable on every computer ever made.
How to open a TXT file?
Every operating system opens TXT out of the box: Notepad on Windows, TextEdit on macOS, and gedit or nano on Linux. Web browsers display them too.
For large files or code, a proper editor such as Notepad++, Visual Studio Code, or Sublime Text is much faster and lets you change the encoding if the text appears garbled.
