Word 97-2003 Template (DOT) is the template format used by Microsoft Word before the 2007 release. A template acts as a blueprint: it stores styles, page layout, fonts, boilerplate text, and any macros, and opening one creates a fresh document based on those settings rather than editing the template itself. Organisations use DOT files for letterheads, invoices, contracts, and report formats so that every document starts out consistent.
How to open a DOT file?
Double-clicking a DOT in Windows creates a new document from it in Microsoft Word. To edit the template itself, open Word first and use File → Open, then select the DOT file.
LibreOffice Writer also reads DOT templates. Bear in mind that DOT files can contain macros, so only open ones from sources you trust. A TEXT file is an ordinary plain-text document, the same thing as a .txt file — unformatted characters with no styling, images, or layout attached. Everything the file contains is readable as-is, which is why plain text is used for notes, logs, configuration files, source code, and data exports. The only piece of hidden information is the character encoding, typically UTF-8, which tells software how to turn the stored bytes back into letters.
How to open a TEXT file?
Any text editor will do. Notepad on Windows, TextEdit on macOS, and gedit on Linux all open the file instantly, and so does every web browser.
If the document is very large or contains code, Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code handle it far more comfortably and let you switch encodings when characters display incorrectly. Word processors such as Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer can import the text if you want to add formatting. You can also convert the file with our TXT to PDF tool.
