Sigma RAW is the raw image format written by Sigma’s SD and dp cameras, saved with the .x3f extension. Its distinguishing feature is the Foveon X3 sensor behind it, which captures red, green, and blue at every pixel instead of interpolating colour from neighbouring photosites. The result is a raw file with remarkable per-pixel detail, though the trade-off is large file sizes and a narrower choice of compatible software.
Use Sigma’s own SIGMA Photo Pro. It is purpose-built for Foveon data and produces noticeably better colour and detail than generic raw converters.
Some third-party developers, including Adobe Lightroom, RawTherapee, and XnView MP, can open Sigma RAW files, but support depends on the camera model. Developing in SIGMA Photo Pro and exporting a 16-bit TIFF is the most reliable route into other editors. You can also convert the file with our X3F to JPG tool.

PNG also supports animations with better transparency (try our GIF to APNG). The benefits of using PNG are Plus, PNG is an open format that uses lossless compression.

Alternative programs such as GIMP or Adobe Photoshop are useful for opening and editing PNG files. PNG files are a bit larger than other file types, so exercise caution when adding them to a web page. One interesting feature of PNG files is the ability to create transparency in the image, particularly a transparent background.
