Raw-audio is a headerless PCM sound file: nothing but the digital samples themselves, with no metadata, no compression, and no marker identifying where the audio begins. A WAV file is essentially the same data with a short descriptive header attached. Raw-audio appears most often as the output of audio hardware, DSP pipelines, and telephony systems, and as the intermediate stage between processing steps.

 

How to open a raw-audio file?

Import it into Audacity using File → Import → Raw Data. You will be asked for the encoding, byte order, channel count, and sample rate, since the file itself does not record them.

 

Common defaults are 16-bit signed PCM at 44,100 Hz or 48,000 Hz; telephony recordings are frequently 8-bit at 8,000 Hz. FFmpeg and SoX can play and convert raw-audio from the command line once you supply the same parameters. Save the result as WAV or MP3 so the settings travel with the file from then on. iPod Audio is an M4A file encoded for Apple iPod players, using AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container. This is the format the iTunes Store sold music in for years, chosen because AAC gives better sound than MP3 at the same file size — a real advantage on a device with limited storage. Track titles, artist names, and album artwork are all carried inside the file.

 

How to open an iPod Audio file?

Add the file to your library in iTunes or the Apple Music app, then sync the iPod. It appears in the device’s music library ready to play.

 

On a computer the same M4A plays in iTunes, VLC media player, Windows Media Player, and foobar2000. Very early iPod models and most non-Apple players expect MP3 instead, so convert the file with our M4A to MP3 tool if it will not appear on the device.
