PowerPoint 97-2003 Slide Show (PPS) is the older, binary counterpart of PPSX: a presentation that opens directly in full-screen playback rather than in the editor. Its contents are the same as a PPT file — slides, images, transitions, and any embedded media — and only the extension tells PowerPoint to start the show immediately. PPS files were widely circulated by email in the 2000s for photo slideshows and animated greetings.

How to open a PPS file?

Double-clicking the file starts the slide show in Microsoft PowerPoint. Press Esc at any point to close it.

To edit rather than play the presentation, open PowerPoint first and use File → Open, or rename the file to .ppt. LibreOffice Impress and Google Slides read PPS as well. Since old PPS files can carry macros, be cautious with unexpected attachments, and convert important ones with our PPS to PDF tool.

PowerPoint 97-2003 Presentation (PPT) is the original binary format of Microsoft PowerPoint, the default from the late 1980s until PowerPoint 2007 introduced PPTX. A PPT file stores slides, text, images, transitions, speaker notes, and any embedded audio or video in a single proprietary structure. Being binary rather than XML, it is larger, more susceptible to corruption, and able to carry macros, which makes unexpected PPT attachments worth treating carefully.

How to open a PPT file?

Every current version of PowerPoint still opens PPT in Compatibility Mode and offers to convert it to the newer PPTX format.

Google Slides, LibreOffice Impress, and Apple Keynote all read PPT. Because Microsoft has steadily reduced support for the legacy format, converting your presentations is worthwhile — try our PPT to PPTX or PPT to PDF tool.
