PowerPoint 97-2003 Template (POT) is the template format used by Microsoft PowerPoint before the 2007 release. A POT stores the design of a presentation rather than its content: slide masters, colour schemes, fonts, background graphics, and placeholder layouts. Opening one creates a new presentation that inherits that design, which is how organisations keep every deck visually consistent with their branding.
How to open a POT file?
Double-click the file and PowerPoint starts a new presentation based on the template. To modify the template itself, launch PowerPoint first and open the POT through File → Open.
LibreOffice Impress also reads POT templates. The modern equivalents are POTX for a plain template and POTM for a macro-enabled one, and PowerPoint will convert a POT to either when you save it. PowerPoint Open XML Presentation (PPTX) is the default format of Microsoft PowerPoint since the 2007 release. A PPTX is a ZIP package of Office Open XML parts holding the slides, layouts, themes, animations, speaker notes, and embedded media. It is markedly smaller and more robust than the old binary PPT format, and it cannot contain macros, which makes it safer to circulate.
