PowerPoint 97-2003 Template (POT) is the template format used by Microsoft PowerPoint before the 2007 release. A POT stores the design of a presentation rather than its content: slide masters, colour schemes, fonts, background graphics, and placeholder layouts. Opening one creates a new presentation that inherits that design, which is how organisations keep every deck visually consistent with their branding.
Double-click the file and PowerPoint starts a new presentation based on the template. To modify the template itself, launch PowerPoint first and open the POT through File → Open.
LibreOffice Impress also reads POT templates. The modern equivalents are POTX for a plain template and POTM for a macro-enabled one, and PowerPoint will convert a POT to either when you save it. Older POT files can contain macros, so open ones from unfamiliar sources with care. You can also convert the file with our POT to PPTX tool.

OpenDocument Presentation (ODP) is the slide-deck format of the OpenDocument standard and the default in LibreOffice Impress and Apache OpenOffice Impress. An ODP is a ZIP package of XML describing the slides, layouts, transitions, and speaker notes, plus any embedded images or media. As an ISO-standardised, vendor-neutral format, it is widely adopted in education and the public sector.
LibreOffice Impress is the natural application for ODP, since it implements the standard in full.
Microsoft PowerPoint has opened and saved ODP since 2009, Google Slides imports it, and Apple Keynote can too. Animations and transitions occasionally differ between suites, so rehearse the deck in whichever program you will present from. Our ODP to PPTX tool handles conversion.
