Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) is a compressed audio file that is often used for speech coding. The AMR speech codec focuses on narrowband signals, which makes it ideal for voice recordings and radio. It is used regularly in Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).
Since AMR files are often used on mobile phones, including for MMS messaging, most 3G mobile devices are able to open them. AMR also opens with VLC media player, QuickTime, RealPlayer, and Xine.
Other software, such as the free audio-editing software Audacity, can open AMR files. Download audacity easily at SourceForge.net. Because AMR files are heavily compressed and focused on narrowband signals, they are not suitable for music files.

iPhone Audio is an M4A file encoded for Apple iPhone, containing AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container. AAC delivers noticeably better sound than MP3 at the same bitrate, which is why Apple adopted it as the default for the iTunes Store and for music on iOS. Choosing this preset produces a file the iPhone plays natively, with artwork and track tags intact.
On the phone, the file plays straight away in the Music, Voice Memos, or Files app — nothing extra is required.
To get the file onto the device, sync it through iTunes, the Finder on macOS, or iCloud Drive. On a computer the same M4A opens in iTunes, the Apple Music app, Windows Media Player, VLC media player, and every major web browser. For maximum compatibility with older devices, convert it with our M4A to MP3 tool.
