Apple QuickTime Movie (QT) is a file format that Apple developed for movie clips. It is very similar to MOV in that it is a container that can hold various types of multimedia files, including 3D and virtual reality (VR). It is an older format, whereas MOV is newer.
By default, a QT file opens with QuickTime. If the QT file is Version 2.0 or earlier, then it can open with Windows Media Player, but more-recent versions will not open in this player. If unable to open a QT file with QuickTime, then use VLC media player, which works across many platforms, including mobile.
Since QT is an older format, it might be necessary to review the QuickTime support topics published by Apple support. Apple offers advice for opening a QT file, as well as help with movie playback.

iPad Video is an MP4 file prepared for playback on Apple iPad. It combines H.264 video with AAC audio at settings matched to the iPad’s larger screen, giving a sharper picture than a phone preset while staying within the limits the device can decode in hardware. The result is smooth playback and efficient battery use, with no conversion needed on the tablet.
On the tablet itself, the file opens in the Photos, Files, or TV app as soon as you tap it. Apple’s built-in player supports the format natively.
On a computer, the same MP4 plays in QuickTime, Windows Media Player, or VLC media player. Transfer it to the iPad using the Finder on macOS, iTunes on Windows, iCloud Drive, or AirDrop. If a clip refuses to play, its resolution or bitrate is probably higher than the iPad model supports. Our video converter can re-encode a clip for a different device or format.
