Specify input file encoding

Sets the character encoding of the input file. Use this if your text shows up as garbled symbols, which happens when a file has no encoding declaration or declares the wrong one. This overrides any encoding declared in the file, so leave it on "Auto" unless you're fixing a specific problem.

Change e-book title

Enter a title (maximum 100 characters) for the output file. This is stored in the file's metadata and is what e-readers display in a library list, rather than the filename. Leave it empty to use the source file's title, if it has one.

What is an AZW3 (Kindle Format 8) file?

Kindle Format 8 (AZW3) is Amazon’s successor to the original AZW e-book format, introduced with the Kindle Fire. It replaced the ageing Mobipocket foundation with support for HTML5 and CSS3, which allows embedded fonts, fixed layouts, drop caps, side-bars, and proper tables. That makes AZW3 far better suited to illustrated books, cookbooks, comics, and technical titles than its predecessor.

How to open an AZW3 file?

Any Kindle e-reader, or the Kindle app on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, opens AZW3. Books purchased from Amazon appear automatically once you sign in.

For files you own outright, Calibre reads AZW3 and converts it to EPUB, PDF, or plain text. Copying a DRM-free AZW3 to a Kindle over USB works as well. Titles bought from the Kindle Store carry DRM and will only open in Amazon’s own software. You can also convert the file with our AZW3 to EPUB tool.
