Apple Pages Document (PAGES) is the native format of Apple Pages, the word processor Apple ships with macOS, iOS, and iCloud. A PAGES file is actually a package containing the text, images, fonts, and layout data together. It supports both word-processing and page-layout modes, which is why Pages is used for newsletters, posters, and reports as well as ordinary letters.

How to open a Pages file?

On a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, double-click the file and Pages opens it. On Windows or Android, sign in to iCloud.com with an Apple ID and open the document in the browser version of Pages.

Other applications generally cannot read the format, so the practical solution is to ask the sender to export the document as DOCX or PDF from the Pages File → Export To menu. Google Docs and Microsoft Word both handle those formats without difficulty. You can also convert the file with our PAGES to PDF tool.

Word Open XML Document (DOCX) is the default format of Microsoft Word since the 2007 release and the most common word-processing format in the world. Despite appearances, a DOCX is not a single document but a ZIP package holding Office Open XML files, images, and styles. That structure makes DOCX smaller than the old DOC format, far more resistant to corruption, and readable by software that has never seen Word.

How to open a DOCX file?

Microsoft Word opens DOCX natively on Windows, macOS, the web, and mobile. Word for the web handles most documents in a browser.

LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs, and Apple Pages all read and edit DOCX, though very complex layouts can shift slightly. When the formatting must stay exactly as the author intended, convert the file with our DOCX to PDF tool before sharing it.
