OpenDocument Text (ODT) is the word-processing format of the OpenDocument standard, the default in LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice. An ODT is a ZIP package containing XML for the text and styles plus any embedded images. Because the specification is published as ISO/IEC 26300 and controlled by no single vendor, ODT is widely used by governments and public institutions that need documents to stay readable for decades.

How to open an ODT file?

LibreOffice Writer is the natural application for ODT, since it implements the standard in full.

You do not need it, though: Microsoft Word has opened and saved ODT since 2009, Google Docs imports it, and Apache OpenOffice Writer handles it natively. Complex layouts can shift a little when moving between suites, so convert the file with our ODT to PDF tool when exact formatting matters.

Rich Text Format (RTF) is a document format Microsoft created so that formatted text could move between different word processors and operating systems. An RTF file is plain text with formatting written as readable control codes, so bold, italics, fonts, colours, tables, and images survive the journey while the file stays open and inspectable. That universality made RTF the safe middle ground for decades, and virtually every word processor ever written can read it.

How to open an RTF file?

RTF opens with no extra software on any system: WordPad and Word on Windows, TextEdit on macOS, and LibreOffice or Google Docs everywhere else.

Because the format is plain text underneath, you can also open an RTF in any text editor to inspect its markup directly. Microsoft stopped developing RTF in 2008, and it does not support modern features such as tracked changes or comments, so convert important documents with our RTF to DOCX tool.
