Microsoft Reader eBook (LIT) is a discontinued e-book format built around a modified Compiled HTML Help container. Its selling point was ClearType rendering, which made text noticeably easier to read on the low-resolution screens of the early 2000s, and it supported bookmarks, annotations, and optional DRM. Microsoft withdrew Microsoft Reader in 2012, leaving LIT a legacy format.
Microsoft Reader is no longer distributed, so the practical route is Calibre, which opens DRM-free LIT files and converts them to EPUB, MOBI, or PDF.
Books that carry Microsoft’s DRM cannot be opened at all now that the activation servers have been shut down. If you have an archive of LIT books, converting them to EPUB is the safest way to keep them readable. You can also convert the file with our LIT to EPUB tool.

Electronic Publication (EPUB) is the open standard for e-books and the format used by almost every retailer except Amazon. An EPUB is really a ZIP package of HTML, CSS, images, and fonts, which means the text reflows to fit whatever screen it is read on. Readers can change the font, size, and margins freely, and the same file works on phones, tablets, e-readers, and computers.
On Apple devices, EPUB opens directly in Apple Books. On Windows and Android, Calibre is the standard choice and doubles as a library manager and converter.
Other good readers are Adobe Digital Editions, which handles DRM-protected library loans, plus Thorium Reader, Google Play Books, and Kobo. Amazon Kindle devices now accept EPUB through Send to Kindle, but for older Kindles convert the file first with our EPUB to MOBI tool.
