It is built directly on Mobipocket, adding Amazon’s own DRM so that purchased books are tied to a customer’s account. Text in an AZW reflows to fit the screen, and the format carries bookmarks, highlights, and reading position, which sync across a reader’s devices.
How to open an AZW file?
Books bought from Amazon open on any Kindle e-reader or in the Kindle app on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, provided you are signed in to the account that purchased them.
Calibre reads and converts DRM-free AZW files and is the usual tool for managing a mixed e-book library. Note that DRM-protected purchases will not open outside Amazon’s apps — that restriction is by design, not a fault with the file. Newer Kindle titles use the AZW3 format instead.
